Audiobook Review: The Alexander Ranch Series: Marla Josephs

Alexander Ranch

I tried not to look at the men so that I could focus on keeping my movements silent. I certainly did not want to be detected. It was impossible, however, to keep my eyes completely off the terrifying drama unfolding before me. I was certain they planned to kill the man, and I had no way of helping him. The best I could do was get to safety and call the police. I had slunk my way to the left of them and was right alongside the river now. I crept along keeping a wary eye on the men. I don’t know whether I gasped, screamed, or made a sudden movement, but suddenly both sets of eyes of the evil men turned towards me just as the shot sounded. I ran as fast as I could, ignoring the ripping pain in my side, and jumped off the edge into the rushing water below.

First, let’s address the elephant in the room, you know the saying never judge a book by it’s cover? Well, right or wrong people decide whether they want to read a book by the cover and it’s a shame because as much as I dislike this cover is, the exact opposite is true of the story, it’s absolutely wonderful and I love it! Since most people buy with their eyes, this little gem of an audiobook, I’m certain, gets overlooked. (Drops mic) Okay on with my review.

All Lela Charles wants is to spend some alone time enjoying the great outdoors, but fate, it seems thinks Lela needs a little bit of excitement, and she stumbles upon three men in the forest, one of them on his knees, the other two with guns in their hand. When a fight between the men ensues, Lela quietly beats feet to find help, but not quiet enough and soon Lela’s in a fight for her life as well! Fortunately for her, she gets some unexpected and unwanted help from the Alexander clan.

I absolutely loved this cat and mouse thriller which throws in a touch of the paranormal. The Narrator Jaime Lamchick did a good job voicing the characters in this 5 plus hour audiobook and the production quality was excellent.

This is the first audiobook in the series and I look forward to listening to the next book in the series.

Book 2 in the series: Into Thin Air

Into Thin Air

They looked as if they weren’t sure what to do with me until they looked down at their fallen comrade I was standing over. Then, it was on.

I’d never fought more than one person at a time before, well, at least not outside of black belt training. But, that was just sparring. Still, I prepared myself just as I would in class. They attacked simultaneously from different sides. I side stepped while delivering a strike to one guy’s gut. The other did manage to catch me in the chest and, though my momentum didn’t allow him to get a good grip, it sent me sprawling.

Lela Charles is spending time with the Alexander clan out at the ranch, trying to get a handle on her special abilities and her growing attraction to Jordan Alexander. When the Alexander’s ask Lela for help she agrees, even though she’s still wary of this strange but loving family. But when Jordan asks her to give their budding romance a try, Lela shoots him down, despite the way he, and no one else makes her feel.

This, the second book in the Alexander Ranch series, has much more of a romantic element to it, but don’t worry, there’s still plenty of action and suspense as well, I have to admit, I was a little frustrated by the way Lela kept thwarting Jordan and then something would happen in the story that would make me think Jordan has every reason to be cautious, and perhaps she’s much wiser than me.

The paranormal storyline is a major focus in this book and I look forward to seeing where book three goes from here!

Jaime Lamchick continues to narrate the series and she does an even better job in this second book, which clocks in at just under six hours. Jaime has fully voiced all the characters in this audiobook and her subtle nuances in tone make it easy to follow which characters speak. The audio production quality is flawless.

Book 3 in the series: Deep In The Night

Deep In The Night

Lela and the Alexanders are back on another case. The bodies are coming in fast and things between Lela and Jordan are heating up. The team will have to race against the clock to stop the murders and crack the case.

Once we were all in position, I visually scanned the house at the end of the street. I had to use night vision goggles to get a good feel for the place while everyone else could use their regular eyes. Once I had the lay of the land, I probed around the back of the house where I couldn’t see. There was one lowly guard out there. The guard began to make his way back to the front of the house, leaving the back completely unguarded. That’s when I sent the signal for all teams to move in.

The Alexander Ranch series just keeps getting better with each book and this, the third book in the series is my favorite… so far! Lela and the Alexanders are on the hunt for a serial killer, maybe two! It’s definitely a great mystery story with a lot of suspense added and it’s not just the thrill of tracking down the killer, but also watching, with fascination the burgeoning romance developing between Lela and Jordan.

I must admit, I’ve had to warm up to the cautious and standoffish way Lela is in her relationship with Jordan. They definitely have chemistry, but the thing about Lela is, she refuses to be ruled by emotion or physical compatibility. Poor Jordan, will he ever learn that Lela is like a porcupine and when you get her riled up you’re gonna be gingerly removing those quills, that are inevitably coming your way! Let’s just say that both Lela and Jordan have some serious issues to work on, I’m rooting for them.

JC Brazil is the narrator of this audiobook and I’m always a little hesitant when I see that the author changes narrators in the middle of a series. My worry was unfounded, JC Brazil did a fantastic job, her pacing was perfect and the time just flew by listening to this audiobook, that is just under six hours in length. I will definitely be on the lookout for more from this narrator. The audio production quality was clear and free of errors.

I look forward to the release of the fourth book in the series.
